Fruit built this town, peaches and apples and above all blueberries, and the National Blueberry Festival still fills four days in early August with a parade, a 5K, live music and a farm day.
The season is long and the crowd is loyal. South Haven was the Catskills of the Midwest a century ago, and the families who come now book the same week every year. They search a phone for dinner on Phoenix Street, for a room, for the bike rental at the end of the Kal-Haven Trail, and the business whose hours and prices are on a real website is the one they find. The factories that came in the 1950s and the farms inland keep a year-round town going behind the summer one.
