Who we are

Harborlight is a family-owned West Michigan web company, built for the lakeshore. We started it for one simple reason. Too many good lakeshore businesses are nearly invisible online. The companies that could fix that either charge too much or won't bother with a shop this size. So we built a better way: the site costs nothing to build, you see the finished thing before you pay, and a flat monthly plan keeps it running.

The day-to-day management is done by AI that we run and stand behind. On our Harbormaster + Crew plan, our family crew reviews the work, answers first, and checks in with you every month. That's the whole org chart.

Who runs it

Jim Ruder started Harborlight. He has spent his career keeping email and logins working for hospitals, universities, and manufacturers, more than 250 migrations of the systems a company cannot afford to have go down for even an afternoon. Harborlight is that same care, pointed at the businesses he actually lives around.

He went to Grand Rapids Community College and has stayed in West Michigan since. He spends his summers on the water in Grand Haven, which is where the idea came from. You notice how many good shops and kitchens and captains are impossible to find online when you are trying to find them yourself.

The crew on the Harbormaster + Crew plan is family. Not all by blood. They are the kids of the people Jim spends his summers with on the water, and he has known most of them a long time. He trains them and checks their work himself, so nothing reaches you because a student thought it looked right. They learn how a real business runs, they get paid, and they put it toward college. That is a large part of why Harborlight exists at all.
