AI search

Your next customer might not use Google at all.

They are asking an assistant instead, and getting one answer back rather than ten links.

The reuben test

Ten years ago, somebody hungry in Grand Haven typed “reuben sandwich near me” into Google and got a list. Ten results, a map, a few ads. They picked one. If you were anywhere on that list, you had a chance.

Today a lot of them open ChatGPT and type “who has the best reuben by me” instead. And they get one answer. Not ten. One restaurant, named, with a sentence about why.

That is a different game entirely. Google gave you ten chances to be noticed. An assistant gives you one, and it picks from what it can actually read.

What the assistant can actually read

ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot all work roughly the same way when someone asks about a local business. They search the web, they read the pages they find, and they answer in their own words.

Here is the part that catches people out. An assistant cannot read the text inside a photograph. It will not open your PDF menu. It does not scroll your Instagram. If your prices, your hours, and what you sell only exist as pictures, then as far as the assistant is concerned, you have not said any of it.

You do not have to type it all out again

This is the part owners dread, and it is why so many menus stay as photographs. Somebody already typed that menu once, into a design program or a printer’s template, and nobody wants to type it a second time.

You do not have to, and this is the part that surprises people: we can read those pictures even though the assistant cannot. Send us the photo, or point us at the one already on your Facebook page, and we turn it into a real text menu. If your menu lives on your online ordering page, a Toast site for instance, we read it straight from there. Direct connections to the POS systems themselves, so a price change in your register updates your site on its own, are being built now. Food, drinks, a wine list, this month’s events. Prices and descriptions come across as written. A PDF works the same way.

Then it is a menu an assistant can actually read, and a menu you can change later by asking, rather than by making a new picture every time the price of whitefish moves.

What we do about it

Every site we build puts the answers in plain text an assistant can read. Your hours, your prices, what you sell, where you are, and the questions customers actually ask you, written as questions so they are easy to find and easy to quote.

We also make sure the story matches everywhere someone looks. If your site says you close at seven and your Google listing says five, an assistant has no way to know which is true, and it will often just pick somebody else.

And we will be straight with you about the parts that are not on your website at all. Reviews, your Google listing, what other sites say about you. We cannot fix all of that for you, but we can tell you exactly where you stand and what would help most.

Questions people ask

Is this the same thing as SEO?
It overlaps, but it is not the same. SEO is about ranking in a list of blue links. This is about being the one business an assistant names when someone asks a question out loud. Both matter, and a site we build does both, but they are not the same job.
Which AI assistants are we talking about?
ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, Grok on X, Perplexity, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot. They differ in the details, but they all do the same thing when someone asks about a local business: search the web, read what they find, and answer in their own words.
Will a good website alone make ChatGPT recommend me?
No, and anyone who promises that is selling you something. An assistant also weighs your reviews, your Google listing, and what other sites say about you. What a good website does is make you readable and consistent, which is what puts you in the running at all. We will also tell you honestly where you stand off the site, including the parts we cannot fix for you.
What is answer engine optimization?
It is the industry name for this, sometimes shortened to AEO. It means writing and structuring a website so an AI assistant can find a clear answer on it and repeat that answer with confidence. Plain facts, questions answered in question form, and the same story everywhere someone looks.
My menu is a photo. Is that a problem?
It is one of the most common problems we see, and it is one we fix for you. An assistant cannot read the text inside a photograph the way it reads a web page, so a picture of a menu is invisible to it. Send us the photo, or point us at the one on your Facebook page, and we read it and build the real text menu from it. You do not retype anything.
Do I have to type my whole menu out again?
No. We work from what you already have: a photo, a printed menu, a PDF, the one on your current site, or your online ordering page. If you take orders through something like Toast, your menu is already there and we read it from there. Food, drinks, wine lists and event calendars all work the same way, and prices and descriptions come across as written. After that you change it by asking, not by making a new picture every time a price moves.
Can you connect directly to my POS system?
Not yet, and we will say so plainly rather than let you assume otherwise. Today we read your menu from wherever it already is, including your online ordering page, and that happens without you doing anything. Direct connections to the registers themselves, so a price you change at the counter updates your site on its own, are being built now.
Do you do this for every customer or is it an extra?
Every site we build is written this way from the start. There is no upsell for it. On the Harbormaster plan the AI keeps tuning it as your business changes, and on Harbormaster + Crew a person reviews that work as well.
How would I know if it is working?
Ask an assistant about your own business and see what it says. That is the honest test, and it is the same test we run. Your monthly report also tracks how your site is doing, and the keeper will tell you which specific questions your site still cannot answer.

Try it on your own business.

Ask ChatGPT what it knows about you. If the answer is thin or wrong, that is the problem we fix.
