Why an assistant does not mention your business.

It reads more than your website, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a website and let you find out.

Ask an assistant for the best breakfast in Grand Haven and it does not go and read one website. It assembles an answer from everything it can find about the places on that shore, then names one or two.

Which means your website is one input among several. It is the input you control completely, so it is the right place to start, and it is not the whole picture. We are a website company telling you that a website is not enough, which should tell you we mean it.

Everything it reads, in order

Ranked by how much each one moves a local recommendation. Ours is third, which is where it honestly belongs.

1

Your Google Business Profile

The single biggest input for anything with a place in the question. It is where your hours, category, address and reviews are held, and assistants lean on it heavily.

What to do: Claim it if you have not. Then fix the category, the hours including holidays, and add photographs taken this year.

2

Reviews, and what they say

Not the star rating so much as the words. An assistant asked for the best breakfast reads what people wrote, and the dish they named is the dish it repeats.

What to do: Ask every happy customer, in person, at the moment they are happy. Never buy them and never write them yourself. A model reading a wall of identical five-star sentences discounts all of them, and so does everyone else.

3

Your own website

The one source you control completely, and the only one where you decide the wording. If your hours, prices and what you sell exist only as photographs, none of it can be quoted.

What to do: Get everything into text. This is the part we do.

4

Apple Business Connect and Bing Places

This is how Siri and Alexa find you, and it is the step almost everybody skips. Neither reads websites the way ChatGPT does: Siri answers out of Apple Maps, Alexa answers out of Bing and Yelp. A business that has done Google properly can still be invisible to both, and to Copilot and Apple Intelligence, which draw on the same two.

What to do: Claim both. Free, about an evening for the pair. Apple is businessconnect.apple.com and Bing is bingplaces.com. Check the hours and the category on each, because these listings are often generated automatically from old data and nobody ever goes back to look.

5

Your Facebook page

Still where a lot of small businesses actually publish, and still widely read. A page with current hours and recent posts is worth having even if the website carries the load.

What to do: Keep the hours current and post something now and then. A page abandoned in 2023 says you might be closed.

6

Local news, the chamber, event listings

A mention on a tourism site, a chamber directory or a local paper is a third party saying you exist. That carries weight no self-description can.

What to do: Join the chamber if it is worth it locally. Get onto the events calendar when you do something. Answer the reporter who calls.

7

Directories for your trade

Charter listing sites, marina guides, contractor registries. Narrow, but they are exactly what an assistant reaches for on a narrow question.

What to do: Be listed accurately on the two or three that matter in your line of work. Check that the hours and phone on each one match your site.

8

People talking about you

Forums, local groups, threads where somebody asks where to eat. This is the hardest to influence and often the most quoted.

What to do: Nothing artificial. Posting fake recommendations about yourself is both obvious and worth less than doing the work that earns a real one.

If you do one thing this month

Claim and fix your Google Business Profile. It is free, it takes an evening, and for a local business it is worth more than anything else on the list including us.

Then start asking for reviews properly. Not a card on the counter, an actual sentence from you to somebody who just told you they enjoyed it.

What we are building next

Doing this list yourself means checking eight places and knowing which two are wrong. We are building a page inside your account that does that checking for you: where you are listed, where you are not, where the hours disagree with each other, and which of them is worth an evening.

It is not finished, so it is not something you are paying for today. When it is, it will be part of the plan you are already on.

Questions people ask

Why does ChatGPT not mention my business?
Usually because there is not enough about you for it to read. It builds a local answer from your Google listing, your reviews, your website, your Facebook page and whatever local sources mention you. If most of those are thin or missing, there is nothing to quote, so somebody else gets named.
Will a good website alone get me recommended?
No, and we would rather say so. The website is the part you control completely, which makes it the right place to start, and it is roughly the third most important input for a local recommendation. Your Google listing and your reviews usually matter more.
Can I pay someone to get me into AI answers?
Nobody can guarantee it, because nobody controls it. What can be done is real work on the things above, and anybody promising a placement, a ranking or a number of mentions is describing something they cannot deliver.
How long does it take?
Weeks rather than days. A crawler has to come back and read the changes, and the assistants rebuild their picture on their own schedule. The fastest-moving piece is usually the Google Business Profile, which can shift within days.

Including the parts a website cannot fix. The build costs nothing and neither does the honest assessment.
